Beorc: Rune of Purification

The mother's cup be filled with light
by that which she has borne
for in the soul of every child
the source hath taken form
and she shall nourish and protect
her gift from high above
so perfect be the union
that fills her heart with love

The Rune Beorc represents the Birch tree (Betula Pendula). It is symbolic of purity & purification -- as well as being the rune of mystery.

'The Birch bears no fruit, yet it shoots without seeding, has shining branches high in its ornamented helm, loaded with leaves, touching the sky.'

Beorc's element is earth. Its number is double the sacred nine of Hagal; which signifies new beginnings on a higher, organic, level as the number eighteen is a number of Northern numbers of completion, marking the point at which primal laws have been defined; and the stage set for the play of life to begin in earnest.

In castings Beorc refers to both spring and rebirth. The birth of new life; matters relating to fertility & the family; to the growth of lifestock and crops … but its main indication is that of the birth of human life; to marriages & engagements and to the start of lasting happiness.
