Ongoing quakes hit Lake Taupo

There is an ongoing swarm of earthquakes around Lake Taupo.

GNS Science reports in the past week there has been between 40 and 50 quakes in the area. Most of them have a magnitude of about 3, which cannot be felt.

Volcano Surveillance Coordinator Brad Scott says it is not usual for Taupo to experience so many shocks in such a short space of time.

He says there is a lot of activity for six months, and then there will be nothing for a few years. Mr Scott says the quakes do not indicate that Taupo's volcano is about to erupt.
