The World Health Organization (WHO) has partnered with German telecommunications company Deutsche Telekom to create a global Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine verification app.Deutsche Telekom is one of the world’s largest telecommunications corporations. The WHO’s partnership is with one of the company’s subsidiaries, T-Systems, an internationally operating information technology company.
The WHO’s partnership with the company is meant to “link every person on the planet to a QR code digital ID” that will allow for the establishment of a global vaccine passport verification system.
Once tested to check COVID-19 vaccinations, this QR code-based software solution would be expanded to allow the app to check for other vaccinations as well, such as polio or yellow fever.
“COVID-19 affects everyone. Countries will therefore only emerge from the pandemic together,” claimed Garrett Mehl, unit head of the WHO’s Department of Digital Health and Innovation. “Vaccination certificates that are tamper-proof and digitally verifiable build trust.”
“WHO is therefore supporting member states in building national and regional trust networks and verification technology,” he continued. “The WHO’s gateway service also serves as a bridge between regional systems.
