Flood-ravaged shops looted

Stores in Newcastle, New South Wales, have hired extra security to protect their goods as the first cases of looting have emerged from the weekend's storms. Police have confirmed two stores and an unknown number of cars were reportedly robbed in the wake of Newcastle's flooding, and store owners have said a mob of up to 30 looters fought security in west Newcastle on Sunday. "We've also had reports that vehicles that were abandoned have been damaged and items missing. It may be that someone has broken a window, or that flood debris and water rushing through the car has caused the damaged." (Sydney Morning Herald)
