Shifting ship will be trial and error

'Moving the Pasha Bulker from Nobbys Beach will include trial and error. None of it will be easy'

Salvage experts were drawing up plans yesterday to refloat the ship, despite confirmation the bulk carrier has a hole ripped in its outer hull. Water is not entering the inner hull, which means the 700 tonnes of heavy fuel, 38 tonnes of diesel and 40 tonnes of lube oil on board are safe for now. All the fuel has been pumped to containment areas close to the ship's deck, away from the hull which might be pierced again during salvage operations. The hole is understood to have been punched into the hull when the 225-metre ship bounced across Nobbys' "Big Ben" reef on Friday. (Sydney Morning Herald)
