McCanns Want Suspect Status Lifted

Reports that Madeleine McCann's parents would soon be named as the prime suspects in the case have been dismissed as "unsubstantiated" by the family spokesman. (Sky News Thursday 3rd January 2008)

Exactly eight months after Madeleine vanished, Kate and Gerry McCann are hopeful police will review the case and strip them of their "arguido" status.

But a Portuguese tabloid newspaper claimed an interim dossier handed to prosecutors by detectives maintained the theory that Madeleine had been accidentally killed by her parents. This led to speculation among the British press that the couple would be labelled as the prime suspects over her disappearance.

However, spokesman Clarence Mitchell blasted the stories as "unsubstantiated reports".
