Hawthorn

Thomas the Rhymer, the famous thirteenth century Scottish mystic and poet, once met the Faery Queen by a hawthorn bush from which a cuckoo was calling. She led him into the Faery Underworld for a brief sojourn, but upon reemerging into the world of mortals he found he had been absent for seven years. Themes of people being waylaid by the faery folk to places where time passes differently are common in Celtic mythology, and the hawthorn was one of, if not the, most likely tree to be inhabited or protected by the Wee Folk. In Ireland most of the isolated trees, or so-called 'lone bushes', found in the landscape and said to be inhabited by faeries, were hawthorn trees. Such trees could not be cut down or damaged in any way without incurring the often fatal wrath of their supernatural guardians. The Faery Queen by her hawthorn can also be seen as a representation of an earlier pre-Christian archetype, reminding us of a Goddess-centred worship, practised by priestesses in sacred groves of hawthorn, planted in the round. The site of Westminster Abbey was once called Thorney Island after the sacred stand of thorn trees there.

Hawthorn is at its most prominent in the landscape when it blossoms during the month of May, and probably the most popular of its many vernacular names is the May-tree. As such, it is the only British plant which is named after the month in which it blooms. As 'Thorn' it is also the most common tree found in English place names, and the tree most frequently mentioned in Anglo-Saxon boundary charters. It has many associations with May Day festivities. Maori oral traditions clearly state that, upon arrival in New Zealand, Maori found that there was a large, well-established population already living in the country. The inhabitants were described as having skin complexion that was white to light-ruddy, with eye colours from blue to green to darker tints. Their hair colours ranged from white and dull-golden, with red being predominant in the general population. There were also shades of brown through to black and braided samples of this multi-coloured hair (taken from the Waitakere rock shelters) used to be on display at Auckland War Memorial Museum.

In physical stature most groups were about the same height as Maori, but there was one widely dispersed group described as being considerably smaller (white pygmies) with fine, childlike features, white-golden hair and large watery blue-green eyes. Around Port Waikato and distributed up the West Coast beyond the Hokianga Harbour to Mitimiti was yet another group who were very tall, achieving an average adult height of around 7-feet. Since early colonial times the skeletal remains of these people have been continuously observed as trussed, sitting position burials in coastal sand dunes or laid-out horizontally in caves.

Maori used umbrella terms like Patu-paiarehe, Turehu and Pakepakeha as names for these earlier inhabitants, but each Maori tribe developed their own regional names, such as Ngati Kura, Ngati Korakorako and Ngati Turehu for the Patu-paiarehe tribes in the Rotorua lakes district of the central North Island. The last, intact surviving tribe was the Ngati Hotu who lived in Hawkes Bay district and later around Lake Taupo, until their defeat in the Battle of the Five Forts.

The Maori term, Pakeha, later used to describe white colonial Europeans, was derived from the ancient name Pakepakeha used to describe the former white population. In the same way, when we plan a road trip, we carry maps and guidebooks in an effort to understand where we are going. In both cases, though, the journey has a life of its own and maps, while helpful, can only take us so far. There is just no comparison between looking at a line on a piece of paper and driving your own car down the road that line represents.

Daily OM: There are times when our whole world seems to be falling apart around us, and we are not sure what to hold onto anymore. Sometimes our relationships crumble and sometimes it’s our physical environment. At other times, we can’t put our finger on it, but we feel as if all the walls have fallen down around us and we are standing with nothing to lean on, exposed and vulnerable. These are the times in our lives when we are given an opportunity to see where we have established our sense of identity, safety, and well-being. 'Ghost' spotted in background of Goodlife Festival photo

An eerie photograph taken at a music festival in Brisbane has revealed the shadowy figure of a young girl holding a teddy bear in the background.

And, to make things even more mysterious, Good Life Festival management have released a statement confirming that the photo is legitimate.

Hysteria began online when promoters shared a photo of the event at the Brisbane Showgrounds.

The original photo shows revellers in the foreground with a lit-up stage behind them and at first glance, nothing seems to be out of the ordinary.

From a distance it could be mistaken as a cloud of smoke, but a closer look of the picture reveals the figure of a young girl with dark hair, wearing a white dress and holding a teddy bear as she stands on the roof of a warehouse in the background.

The spooky image has left many viewers stunned.

“We have checked with the photographer who took the photo and the original image from the memory stick also shows the girl,” the statement reads.

“We have since spoken with the Brisbane Showgrounds who have revealed that ground staff refuse to go near one of the old warehouses after repeated sightings of a young girl. It is rumoured a little girl named Lucy died at the site in the early 1900's and has haunted it since.”

Cracking the Canberra Code

What are Glamis Castle’s horrible secrets?

When you hear or tell stories of Scottish castles, myths and legends, there is little doubt that Glamis Castle will be amongst them. Located in the village of Glamis in Angus, Scotland, the castle is dripping in history and tales of murder, monsters, ghosts and devilish card games. It is thought to be the most haunted castle in Scotland.

There are several tales of a Glamis “monster'”, which involves a hidden room and a hideous monster which resides in it. Although, it is a macabre tale of a badly-deformed child, thought to be the son of the 11th Earl of Strathmore born in 1821. So severe were the deformities, they registered the child as dead and locked him away in a secret room, not expecting him to live beyond infancy. However, the child grew to be an enormous man of great strength and lived for near a century. When any men in the family turned 21, they were offered the chance to see the secret horror of Glamis and see the secret room and what it held. Some of the men refused, afraid of going insane. There is another story of guests staying at the castle who were seeking out the secret room and decided to hang towels from the windows of rooms they could get into. Daily Mail: Always surrounded by an aura of mystery, the moon and its possible influence over human behaviour has been object of ancestral fascination and mythical speculation for centuries. While the full moon can't turn people into werewolves, some people do accuse it of causing a bad night's sleep or creating physical and mental alterations.

But is there any science behind these myths?

To establish if lunar phases affect humans, an international group of researchers studied children to see if their sleeping patterns changed or if there were any differences in their daily activities.The research studied a total of 5,812 children from five continents.The children came from a wide range of economic and sociocultural levels, and variables such as age, sex, highest parental education, day of measurement, body mass index score, nocturnal sleep duration, level of physical activity and total sedentary time were considered.

Data collection took place over 28 months, which is equivalent to the same number of lunar cycles. These were then subdivided into three lunar phases: full moon, half-moon and new moon.

The findings obtained in the study revealed that in general, nocturnal sleep duration around full moon compared to new moon reported an average decrease of five minutes (or a one per cent variant)...>>>Read more...

Not since The Tangerine Dream blog back in 2011 have we made English Soccer predictions for MJ's home team Blackpool FC. It's a long time since the English Premier League ... Blackpool face an almost certain drop into the fourth tier of English Football. That will be three relegations in the last 5 years. Relegation from the Premier League after one season in 2011. Relegation from the Championship last season into the 1st Division and now a drop from that division after the final game on Saturday. Yes? We would say so.

Blackpool MUST beat Peterborough Utd away on Saturday and hope that Fleetwood Town lose to bottom club Crewe. If this happened, Blackpool would remain and Fleetwood would be relegated instead. If Fleetwood win or draw then Blackpool are relegated. So a miracle is needed.

CARD PREDICTION
On first viewing the cards appear to suggest a survival by Blackpool FC. Their cards are The Magician and a reversed 4 of Crescents. The reversed 4 of Crescents suggests avoiding the drop to the 4th tier ... hence the crescents rising not falling. The Magician providing the indication they pull the rabbit out of the hat as the magician. The User of Staves and The World card for Peterborough plotting something out of the ordinary enabling Blackpool to win by a one goal margin. The 7 of Crescents hinting at the improbably taking place.

The 1 on the Magician suggests Blackpool surviving by 1 point.

That is on first viewing.

Gazing at Fleetwood's cards reveals the Giver of Weapons reversed and Justice ... a combination if this was a relationship reading would indicate a divorce ... losing their manager after the game? A relegation? The Keeper of Weapons centrally reversed is not very clear in its meaning, except the character would fall down if upside down which suggest Fleetwood will fall out of the division. Crewe's cards shows that their plight was already clear before the game. The 8 of Weapons suggests their bottom of the ladder plight whatever happens. The Maker of Staves is similar in a sense to The Magician card. In Blackpool's cards The Magician suggested a win by The Seasiders. So does it suggest a win by Crewe?

Ufologists and UFO hunters claim that the enigmatic object is in fact, NASA’s way of hiding numerous UFO’s that have been photographed orbiting the sun. Ufologists say that this isn’t the first time similar objects have been spotted near the sun. In fact, they point towards a complex and unprecedented cover-up by numerous space agencies which try very hard to keep to public from noticing what’s really going on in the interstellar medium.

While the giant ‘Cube-shaped’ objects and UFO’s might not be anything more than mere image processing errors, they have fueled a debate between believers and skeptics about the nature behind the enigmatic objects.

‘This cube has been seen before off and on,’ explained Scott C. Waring of UFO Sightings Daily, on his website.

What is Homocysteine?

Homocysteine is an amino acid. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins. When proteins break down, elevated levels of amino acids like homocysteine may be found in the bloodstream. Having elevated levels of homocysteine in the blood (hyperhomocysteinemia) is associated with atherosclerosis and blood clots.

It is not possible to get homocysteine from the diet. It must be made from methionine, another amino acid that is found in meat, fish, and dairy products. Vitamins B6 (pyridoxine), B12 and folic acid are needed to make this reaction occur...read more>>>...

Kate McCann's secret trip to the Portuguese resort where Madeleine vanished nine years ago

Daily Mail: The mother of Madeleine McCann has returned to the spot where her daughter disappeared nine years ago in Portugal. Kate McCann took a secret trip to Praia da Luz, situated in the Algarve, where she took time out to walk the streets and contemplate the past few years.

On Tuesday it is the ninth anniversary of Madeleine's disappearance. She was just three years old when she vanished while on holiday with her parents in Portugal on 3 May 2007. 

'Kate went back last month. She likes to stroll along the beach and relive the memories of them together,' a friend, who did not wish to be identified, told Tracey Kandohla at The Daily Mirror.

Despite a high-profile hunt, no trace of her has ever been found. Kate and Gerry McCann maintain hope that Maddie may still be alive and recently called for a new artist impression of their daughter for fear she may not be recognised.
