UK: Flood Warnings Extended

I compose this posting as heavy rain continues to fall here in New Zealand. Tracking the news stories for these storms ... in the UK, Australia, Pakistan, USA etc ... gives me the distinct impression of it all being a 'world storm'. It appears to be simultaneously raining in the UK & New Zealand. Satellite weather maps of both areas show the same circular cyclonic pattern. I just wonder if these current storms are the extended family of the first notable storm ... Cyclone Gonu? Are they all related? Because it appears there's been nothing but reports of heavy rains and storms around the world for the last two months. Certainly since the end of the G8 summit.

Daily Express Headline 'Flood Warnings Are Extended:
Forecasters have extended flood warnings across the UK ahead of torrential rain and gale force winds expected over the next 24 hours. The Met Office said the heaviest downpours would arrive as a storm band sweeps over England and Wales, accompanied by strong to gale force winds.More than two inches of rain is predicted from Yorkshire to north east Wales, with up to four inches in some areas. The exceptional amount of rain is likely to cause more widespread disruption and flooding than in recent days, especially in areas that are already saturated, the Met Office warned.
