Eight months after Madeleine disappears, Gerry McCann returns to work

The consultant cardiologist hopes that resuming full-time hours will help his family gain some semblance of normality after the anguish of 2007.

But he and wife Kate have vowed never to give up on the search for their missing daughter and are reviewing their campaign to find the four-year-old.

Mr McCann, 39, has not worked full-time since he took extended unpaid leave after Madeleine disappeared, so he and his wife could concentrate on the search. But he started part-time hours on November 1, with limited contact with patients, and was assessed by his bosses before they approved his request to return to his normal schedule at Leicester's Glenfields Hospital.

Mr McCann is a leading expert in assessing and interpreting MRI heart scans, but does not perform surgery. Officials at the hospital said his work over the last two months had been closely monitored to ensure he was coping with his workload, following warnings from patients' groups that he could not concentrate fully on work while he and Mrs McCann remained suspects in their daughter's disappearance.
