London has welcomed in the New Year in spectacular style. (Sky News Headline 'New Year Lightshow Lights Up London' Tuesday 1st January 2008)As the bells of Big Ben rang out, thousands of people lined the River Thames to watch the annual New Year's fireworks display.Some 3,500 police officers were on the street of the capital to make sure things went off peacefully.
New Zealand was the first major country to welcome in 2008. Kiwi clocks struck midnight at 11am GMT.
