Hundreds Flee Hospital Inferno

Hundreds of cancer patients have been evacuated after a devastating fire engulfed the top floor of a world famous London hospital. (Sky News Wednesday 2nd January 2008)

Two operations had to be stopped at the Royal Marsden Hospital and four people were treated for smoke inhalation. All of the patients and staff have now been taken to safety.

At least 25 fire engines and 125 firefighters went to the scene to tackle the flames. The roof of the Royal Marsden was engulfed in flames with smoke visible for miles around.

Its chief executive Cally Palmer said the fire started in the fourth floor plant room."There was construction work adjacent, but we've no idea what the cause of the fire was at this stage," Ms Palmer said.

As emergency services evacuated the building, some patients were laid on mattresses in an ambulance area on a nearby street, with nursing staff in attendance.

(Comment: On the same day when GMcC goes back to work in a hospital elsewhere in the country ... apparently ... there is a hospital which has a significant fire. Coincidence surely.)
