Concern among voters is high and growing. According to YouGov, over two-thirds of Brits think immigration has been too high, a figure which has risen from about half two years ago. Immigration is the top issue for all voters, and has been for Tory voters since the end of the pandemic. The summer riots show how fractious the situation now is.
Yet Sir Keir Starmer and the Labour Government have no strategy for dealing with it, or at least not one they are prepared to admit to in public. They say nothing at all about legal migration.
On illegal arrivals, Yvette Cooper’s plan seems limited to appointing a new Border Security supremo. Rumour has it that few people want that job, which is hardly surprising, since with Labour policies they are guaranteed to fail: whoever accepts the role might as well take the pay-off on the day that they are appointed.
None of this matches up to the seriousness of the situation. Twelve people drowned this week in the Channel.
