Constructing Reality

Metro News; says: THERE’S been a lot in the papers recently about fake telly – whether it’s pretending the Queen was miffed about something, dodgy phone lines or lying about someone snuffing it when the cameras were rolling. Well, let me let you into a little secret. Most telly is, to some extent or another, staged. It’s far easier to edit in newspapers, you just chop out words there.

As a viewer, you’d be pretty miffed if all they showed on Big Brother was people sunbathing and chatting about the weather, even if that’s what happens 95 per cent of the time. The truth is only the interesting stuff – the rows, the tears, the sex – is worth watching. So when you’re out of character you’re more likely to be on the screen. If television were really like real life, you’d find something better to do.
