Elemental Spirits are the creatures evolved in the four kingdoms of earth, air, fire, and water, and called by the Kabbalists as gnomes, sylphs, salamanders, and undines. They may be termed the forces of nature, and will either operate effects as the servile agents of general law, or may be employed by the disembodied spirits - whether pure or impure - and by living adepts of magic and sorcery, to produce desired phenomena; results.
According to occult science, the hierarchical "forces of nature" are alive and semi-intelligent. They can be harnessed by "living adepts of magic and sorcery" to effect operations of divination. Eliphas Levi, a magical adept of the 19th Century, wrote, "To govern elementary spirits and thus become king of the occult elements, we must first have undergone the four ordeals of ancient initiations; and seeing that such initiations exist no longer, we must have substituted analogous experiences ... the word of our will must be imposed on the elements by special consecrations of air, fire, water and earth. This is the indispensable preliminary of all magical operations." Levi proposed initiations in which a magician would totally conquer fear of the four elements. This, he felt, would enable a magician to confront the elementals in their own natural habitats and control them.
Enochian Magic, based on the occult work of Dr. John Dee and his scrier, Edward Kelly, proposes that elemental spirits inhabit specific regions of the invisible worlds called the four Watchtowers. The Angel Ave, said to Dee and Kelly, "The Fourth is the Cross of those Creatures that live in the four Elements, as you call them. The first Angel the aire. The second - the water. The third - the earth. The fourth - the life, or fire of things that live."
According to Enochian Magic, there are 4 Great Watchtowers, one in each of the 4 directions of space and for each of the 4 elements. Each of these can be divided into 4 subquadrants. Thus we have a subquadrant Air of Air (A of A), a Fire of Air (F of A), and so on. Each Watchtower is divided into 13 rows and 12 columns, making a total of 256 squares. Each square contains a letter of the Enochian alphabet, called the Angelic Language.
