Police are warning residents in Taranaki to stay indoors after reports of several tornados hitting the area tonight. Police central communications centre team leader Stacey Robinson said several tornadoes had been reported to have hit the coast of Taranaki from Oakura to Waitara. Several trees had come down onto roads in the area and roofs had been blown off. Fire, ambulance and police were responding. New Plymouth was one of three places in the North Island hit by tornados yesterday. New Plymouth police said about five tornados had gone through the Taranaki area. No serious injuries had been reported at this stage. New Plymouth fire service spokesman Ian Drewery told NZPA crews were out "all over the place" after what appeared to be widespread tornados coming ashore. There was damage to the north east of the city with roads blocked and trees and power lines down in a number of places from Waitara across to Inglewood.
