Northlanders braced themselves for another day of battering today as Whangarei remained isolated by slips and flooding and the stormy weather showed no sign of easing. Overnight several roads south of Whangarei were closed to all traffic as large trees were blown over in 130kmh winds and several small Northland towns had metre-high floodwater running through the main streets.
Much of Northland was without power, roads remained closed by floodwaters and many homes were evacuated, some just days after repairs were completed after severe damage from the huge weather bomb to hit the area in March.
Police and emergency services urged people to stay at home and off the roads as the weather carnage headed south overnight to cause similar but less severe problems in Auckland and the Coromandel Peninsula.
In Auckland hundreds of homes on the North Shore were still without power today, the harbour bridge was half in darkness because of failed street lights, and many roads were flooded and closed on the Coromandel Peninsula.
The weather emergency caused one of the busiest nights on record for emergency services with more than 2500 calls to the police Northern Communications Centre in Auckland in 10 hours.
