City braces for demo

Sidney Morning Herald Headline; says: 'Protesters have gathered in central Sydney to march against the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation forum despite a heavy police presence. As APEC leaders - including US President George W. Bush and Prime Minister John Howard - arrived by heavily guarded motorcades at the Sydney Opera House for the summit, riot squads with shields and were deployed in some parts CBD. Hundreds of protesters gathered at Town Hall. They were marched by scores of uniformed and plain clothes police and a large media contingent. Several buses converted into paddy wagons were parked nearby.

Many of the protesters carried placards reading: "End the occupation of Iraq", "Save the planet", "Drop Bush, not bombs" and "Put the water cannon to good use. Give Morris Iemma an enema". On the other side of George Street two men held up a pro-APEC sign that read "Socialism sucks".
