Sunday Express Front Page Headline 'Madeleine Mystery: Father Is Close To Crack Up'

The heartbroken father of Madeleine McCann is feared to be on the verge of an emotional breakdown, it emerged last night. Friends and family are terrified the distress is having a drastic effect on his mental and physical wellbeing. Over the past month Gerry McCann has had to endure a vicious hate campaign, fuelled by the Portuguese media, which claims he killed Madeleine and dumped her body.

But even during the darkest moments, the 39-year-old hospital consultant has remained a pillar of strength, fighting to protect his family against vile speculation surrounding what happened on the night of May 3.In recent weeks, however, he has become increasingly frustrated with the hapless police investigation and feels that he can no longer control his life while it remains in a state of limbo. As he awaits the results of DNA tests which hold the key to clearing his family’s name, cardiologist Gerry has become visibly annoyed with close friends and wellwishers. His usual clinical style when dealing with questions has fuelled speculation in Portuguese newspapers and created an angry backlash against him in thousands of internet chat rooms.

Now family members fear the intolerable distress caused by this witch hunt has left him facing a personal crisis. Last night a close friend said she is worried he can no longer cope with the intense scrutiny and urged him to fly his family home.

Gerry has worked hard for everything he has achieved,” she said. “He has always kept his emotions and feelings under control and is a very calm person. What has happened has been a huge blow and he is really struggling to keep going. He is now finding this hard because he can no longer control events or the cruel things that are being said about him.No father under this amount of pressure could possibly cope with what he is having to go through. This has been going on for four months and still shows no sign of slowing down. It’s getting nastier every day." (Sunday Express)

Ok, bods at the Daily Express office, I really think it is time you gave the below the belt gutter press a rest. You've sold enough papers now on the back of this story. It's time to move on and find another perch on which to stand. Your methods of covering the story over the past weeks has been nothing short of awful ... in a similar vein to the Portuguese papers in truth. Mountains and mountains of news papers sold on the basis of utter trite ... unfounded speculation ... sickly macabre sensationalism ...

Ok, I agree the Madeleine's disappearance is a mystery. There is more to it than meets the eye ... but there are ways of keeping the story alive in your news paper without such disgusting headlines. Just imagine for one moment it is your own daughter which has gone missing ... imagine that it is you who is going through what Gerry McCann is going through .... now feel what it must be like to read these headlines each and every day. Its not a very nice feeling is it?

Now is about the time that the 'Madeleine was murdered', or the 'Maddy is dead', speculations should cease ... it is always darkest before the dawn ... before the first light appears. Negative almost always comes before positive news .... so I would expect more should be made of the recent Spanish & French sightings. I think maybe that line of speculation might soon be a better means of selling the news. Perhaps the 'worker bees' at the Express offices should be instructed to investigate the sightings that Maddy is alive .... because she IS still alive and she WILL be returned alive. We all had to sadly endure the macabre smokescreens first, to now get to the point where the first traces of sunlight can commence .... more emphasis should be placed on the meaning of the official campaign web site ... 'bring Madeleine home' .......
