So many people have not experienced a loving relationship between their own parents and therefore have no role model of what love should feel like or look like. Many of us have been exposed to the idea that love should be romantic and sweep us off our feet. While this is a natural part of any relationship, the true test of our love comes from our willingness to explore this world with another person; to not only share in the delights that we encounter but also to negotiate the bumps in the road together. Generally this often takes the form of a mutual exchange of ideas, but because any relationship is based on the needs and experiences of two people, we might also face a certain amount of misunderstanding. Daily OM: We humans have a knack for coming together and rising up to our potential in the face of a tragedy. Natural disasters and acts of violence bring us out of our small selves and into the world, ready to lend a hand to those in need. This experience is often life-changing for those who are willing to step into the position of helper. We feel as if we are finally doing something really important, and this leads us to feeling more self-actualized. We feel more connected to the people we are helping, as well as more connected to humanity in general. As we expand beyond the boundaries of our individualistic pursuit of happiness there can be a complete reality shift. We often find that it is much easier to be happy when we are motivated in an effort to make the world better in tangible ways, by coming to the rescue of those who are suffering. Considering the many benefits of this kind of gesture, it is surprising that more of us don’t devote our lives, or at least some portion of our time, to serving people in need. We don’t have to wait for a tragedy to come together, as a community or a nation, and offer ourselves to the world in service. Sometimes it’s easier, of course, to respond to an event that has just happened rather than to ongoing problems like homelessness, poverty, and illness. But the truth of this world is that there is always someone in need of our best efforts to rally a group of helpers and healers. A Word on 'Heron Medicine'

A lone Heron flew over us during our journey back home tonight. Not seen a Heron in flight for a while. Being a constant observer of the landscape around me ... I immediately acknowledged the Heron as a totem for the present time:

Spirit Lodge: It is important for anyone with a heron totem to explore various activities and dimensions of earth life. On the surface, this may seem a form of dabbling, but those with herons as totems are wonderfully successful at being the traditional "jack of all trades."

This ability enables them to follow their own path. Most people will never be able to live the way heron people do. It is not a structured way, and does not seem to have a stability and security to it. It is, though, just a matter of perspective. There is security in heron medicine, for it gives the ability to do a variety of tasks. If one way doesn't work, then another will. This heron people seem to inherently know.

Heron do not seem to need a lot of people in their life, nor do they feel pressure to "keep up with the Joneses" or be traditional in their life roles. The only time they gather in colonies is during the breeding season. They stand out in their uniqueness, and they know how to snatch and take advantage of things and events the average person would not even bother with.

During the greater part of evolution the Ego makes its contact with its reflection, physical plane man, through the center at the top of the head. She is unmarried upon reaching adulthood, often having rejected several suitable young men as husbands. Some versions say she rejected suitors from pride, others say she simply refused to follow tradition. Some versions of the myth have her taking a first husband, a dog. In one version the dog marriage is punishment by her father for refusing to marry and the marriage consummated by the dog raping Sedna, but in another version Sedna falls in love with the dog who proves to be a kind a loving husband. Some versions have no offspring from the dog marriage, but other versions have both human and canine offspring who go on to be the ancestors of Europeans and Inuit.
