Birmingham City Council is set to spend £2.6 million removing British
flags from the streets despite being bankrupt and the most indebted
local authority in the country. The Telegraph has the story.
Birmingham City Council said removing British flags lining the streets would cost £2.6 million, court documents reveal.
The
bankrupt council – run by a coalition of Liberal Democrats, Greens and
independents – said removal works would cost the equivalent of £132 per
flag.
St George’s and Union Jack flags have been plastered
across Britain since last year as part of Operation Raise the Colours, a
movement in favour of promoting national pride.
Around 20,000
flags were installed on lamp posts across Birmingham, which will cost
approximately £2.6 million to remove, according to documents submitted
to the High Court.
Birmingham City Council has more than £3.5
billion of debt, the most of any local authority in the country. In
