Birmingham City Council said removing British flags lining the streets would cost £2.6 million, court documents reveal.
The bankrupt council – run by a coalition of Liberal Democrats, Greens and independents – said removal works would cost the equivalent of £132 per flag.
St George’s and Union Jack flags have been plastered across Britain since last year as part of Operation Raise the Colours, a movement in favour of promoting national pride.
Around 20,000 flags were installed on lamp posts across Birmingham, which will cost approximately £2.6 million to remove, according to documents submitted to the High Court.
Birmingham City Council has more than £3.5 billion of debt, the most of any local authority in the country. In September 2023, it issued a section 114 notice, effectively declaring itself bankrupt, after over a decade of Labour majority control.....<<<Read More>>>...
