Kate and Gerry McCann's new spokesman has given up his Government job to help the 'innocent victims of a heinous crime'. Clarence Mitchell said his position in the civil service became untenable 'from the moment I accepted the role'.Mr Mitchell, with the McCanns standing behind him, said: 'I will simply be representing Kate and Gerry as a private individual, one who believes utterly that they are innocent of any involvement in the disappearance, let alone the death of their daughter Madeleine.'
The former BBC broadcaster spent nearly a month with the couple in Portugal while representing the Foreign and Commonwealth Office between May and June. He said: 'Sometimes I was with them for up to 14 hours a day. During that time I saw or heard nothing that gave me cause for concern or suspicion.'
He added: 'All I witnessed was a loving family that had been plunged into the most dreadful situation - two parents trying to cope amidst their loss. There are highly innocent explanations for anything the police may have found during their inquiries.' (Sky News)
