Hamilton's Hopes On Slender Thread

Lewis Hamilton may still become Formula One champion this season - but any slender hopes hang on an unlikely technical decision.

His dream of being crowned in his debut season was destroyed in the final Grand Prix in Brazil by a combination of driving error and technical problems. Despite starting second, Hamilton made a poor start and then - eight laps later - almost came to a halt because of a gearbox fault.

He could be seen rocking in his McLaren, virtually willing it to get going, while most other drivers streamed by. The car regained power but it was all too late and he finished seventh. The final placings meant that Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen was confirmed as world champion by one point from Hamilton and McLaren team-mate Fernando Alonso.

McLaren appealed over a fuel technicality which, if eventually sustained, would mean that three drivers ahead of Hamilton would be disqualified, promoting him to the F1 title. (Sky News)
