UK Government Weighs Proscribing English Defence League as Terrorist Group

The British government is deliberating whether to classify the English Defence League (EDL) as a terrorist organization, Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner confirmed following violent clashes in Southport. The altercations occurred outside a mosque after a 17-year-old went on a stabbing spree, resulting in the deaths of three children and multiple serious injuries.

Founded in 2009 by activist Tommy Robinson, the EDL aimed to combat what it viewed as the growing Islamization of British society. Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley Lennon, is no longer involved with the organization. Despite his detachment, Robinson continues to make headlines. Over the weekend, he was detained under Britain’s anti-terrorism laws after holding a massive rally in Trafalgar Square, where he screened his latest film, Silenced.
