Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates warned that artificial intelligence is already powerful enough to trigger events that could kill a billion people—joining a growing line of tech leaders sounding the alarm on existential risk.
“AI is certainly powerful enough to drive events that, you know, cause a billion deaths,” Gates said in an excerpt of an interview with NBC’s Meet the Press, scheduled to air this weekend. “There’s never been a weapon as powerful as the combination of people with ill intent using the latest AI tools.”
The remarks land as Silicon Valley’s own ranks have grown louder. Jacob Coxon, a staffer at Anthropic, quit earlier this month and accused both Anthropic and OpenAI of “gambling with our lives” by “racing toward super-intelligent AI.” Another Anthropic employee said he sees a greater-than-10 percent chance that AI wipes out humanity within a decade.
Those warnings have pulled a long, bitter debate into the open and produced public demands for stronger safeguards. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has called for a slowdown in development, a stance quickly backed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk.
Gates said industry self-policing will not suffice. “You need law enforcement and the politicians to get into the discussion about what safeguards and monitoring look like,” he said. “And that has to be a required thing." ...<<<Read More>>>...
