The 135-year-old Kilburn Methodist Church in Kilburn, England, United Kingdom, burned down in the early morning hours of Friday, 11 September.
Firefighters were called to the scene, and nearby houses had to be evacuated. Six fire engines battled the flames for hours before the fire—which locals have described as an ‘inferno’—was put out around 4 am. Locals were then allowed to return to their homes.
The church building was in the process of being converted into an apartment complex when the fire broke out. An initial investigation by local police and the fire department was unable to determine the cause of the fire due to the extensive damage it caused to the structure. The building was thought to be in danger of collapsing, which prevented authorities from properly examining it. As of now, however, the church building in Kilburn is still standing.
