In the Sumerian poem Inanna and Enki, civilization isn't described — it's listed, as roughly 100 physical objects called the MEs, stored by Enki in the Abzu at Eridu. They're not abstractions: the scribal art, the craft of the smith, the art of power, the descent into the underworld — every component of a working society, on luminous, indestructible tablets. Then a goddess got Enki drunk, stole them, and shipped them by boat to Uruk — and from that moment the texts treat Uruk as the seat of civilization. Mainstream scholars accept the MEs as a real, recurring Sumerian concept, yet almost no one has asked what they physically were.
