Listening to relaxing music after an acutely stressful event may help the brain and body return to a calm state more quickly than listening to calming natural sounds, according to a study published in the journal PNAS and reported by mindbodygreen on Sept. 12, 2026.
The research examined how people recover from acute stress. Investigators compared recovery while participants listened to relaxing music versus a calming natural sound, and used functional MRI to track brain activity during the recovery period, the report stated.
According to the report, music produced a greater improvement in positive mood and a faster return of heart rate and nervous system arousal to normal levels.
