But, frustratingly, the police have been unable to trace the driver of the car.
They are now appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time to contact them in order to eliminate themselves from the investigation.
A spokesman for the Belgian police said: “We have been searching for the driver of the black Volvo but so far we have not been able to identify the car. It is a major line of investigation in the case and we want the driver of this car to come forward. It is important that we speak to him. We are a little surprised, given the publicity, that no one has come forward yet.”
Staff at the De Pauze restaurant were able to provide detectives with a milkshake bottle and a straw from which the little girl had been drinking. These have been sent to a laboratory for DNA analysis and the results are expected to be revealed later this week.
Unfortunately, the investigation has been hampered by a lack of closed-circuit TV footage. The restaurant had one camera pointing at the area where the man, woman and child had been sitting but it was not working at the time.
Unable to trace driver. Not been able to identify the car and the one camera in the area of where the man, woman & child were sitting was not working at the time. Mmmm ... odd. Suspicious. 'Unbelievable'.
