Tsunami in Solomon Islands

By KAYE ALBYT

There has been a tsunami in the Solomon Islands after a large earthquake.

Japan's NHK television says the quake measured 7.8 on the Richter scale and struck off the Solomons, at a depth of 10 kilometres.

A spokesman for the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii says there are no details yet on the size or strength of the tsunami. Warnings are in place for Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Nauru and New Caledonia.

GNS seismologist Bryan Fielding says no warning has been issued yet for this part of the world, but the situation is being monitored. He believes New Zealand is unlikely to be badly affected.
