Severe weather warnings as Britain is lashed by summer storms

Daily Mail Headline; says; 'If you thought a rather late summer was finally settling in, think again. The early autumn started today, with gale force winds and torrential rain. Severe weather warnings are in place for most of the UK as heavy rain is expected today and tomorrow. The band of bad weather will spread across the entire country, says the Met Office, disrupting road and rail travel and washing out thousands of holidays. Strong winds are also set to lash coastal areas, though a repeat of the widespread flooding which hit in June and July is unlikely.

For those who have chosen to place their faith in the British weather and book a domestic break, it is depressing news.

And it could be even grimmer for those in the West Country, who are still drying out after the lashing they received in July. They could be hit hard again, with up to three inches of rain and wind speeds of 60mph forecast. There is unlikely to be the scale of devastation seen last month, but flooding is a distinct possibility in some areas.

Met Office forecaster Chris Almond said: "We have issued a severe weather warning for Tuesday and Wednesday for much of the country because it looks like there is going to be some very heavy rain and gale-force winds."
