Stargazers will be able to view an unusually long lunar eclipse next week in the early hours of the morning. On August 28th the moon will pass into the shadow of the Earth, becoming completely immersed for one hour and 30 minutes. This eclipse will be the deepest and longest in the last seven years and will change the colour of the moon from grey to red. People in Europe and Africa will miss out on the spectacle, which will be best viewed from the west coast of the US, Hawaii, Australia and parts of Asia.
It will occur about 03:50 EDT (08:50 BST) and by 05:52 (10:52 BST) the moon will have changed its colour. Its copper-red appearance is due to the sun's light beaming beyond the Earth's circumference into the shadow of our planet and onto the moon. (In The News)
